Quiles’ camera of choice for on-the-go video shooting is the Sony ZV-E10. “The ZV-10 shoots great-looking HD and 4K video, while providing a small, lightweight package that makes some of the other accessories in my setup compliment it even more,” he says. When he’s hand-holding the camera, he likes to use a SmallRig grip, which he says isn’t necessary if you’re using a gimbal. 

There are many excellent lens options for video in the Sony lineup, and Quiles is a big fan of the Sony 10-20mm f/4 G PZ for his run and gun setup. “The f/4 aperture works great when I’m filming outdoors, and the power zoom feature also comes in handy when you’re shooting video.”

Quiles also has an external monitor on his setup, which is actually a Sony Xperia 1 IV. “While the ZV-E10 has a flip screen,” he explains, “having it flipped out can oftentimes make it hard to balance the camera on a gimbal. So instead of having to deal with that, I simply use my Xperia smartphone as my monitor. You get the added benefit here of having a 4K OLED display which has an onboard battery, which again keeps my entire rig nice and compact.”

His setup for video also includes a Variable ND Mist Filter made by Freewell and a Sony ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone. All of these items fit on a small gimbal, the Zhiyun Crane M3, which Quiles says provides him with smooth footage and is light enough that it doesn’t tire out his arms. He mounts the Xperia 1 IV to the gimbal with a SmallRig extension arm and a Manfrotto phone mount. He uses a small capture card that is connected via USBC and an HDMI to USBC cable. “Depending on the specific Sony camera you’re using, you may not need the capture card,” he says, “and you can just use a USBC to USBC cable.” Learn more about using your Xperia as an external monitor in another video from Quiles below.
