Alpha Spotlight: Why The Sony A7 III Is A Dependable Favorite

The Sony Alpha 7 III continues to be a popular camera with content creators and beyond, thanks to its excellent image quality and 4K video all wrapped in a package that makes it easy to create on the go. It’s polished, it’s versatile and it delivers consistent results for the hybrid shooter, so it’s no surprise it’s maintained its place as a dependable favorite amongst Sony shooters for so long. Below we take a look at the tried and true Sony Alpha 7 III in all its innovative glory.

Since its introduction, the Sony Alpha 7 III has been a mainstay for a broad range of content creators. We take a look at why it's such an enduring favorite.

A Fan Favorite, Then & Now

The year it was announced, the Alpha 7 III was named DPReview’s Product of the Year as they called it arguably the best camera on the market at the time. “Other cameras in Sony's lineup offer higher stills resolution and some nice extras, but the Alpha 7 III takes most of the essentials, and packages them inside an attractive, very usable and affordable body.”

There are many features of the Alpha 7 III that make it such a continued success – the in-body image stabilization, built-in intervalometer, Real Time Eye-AF and Animal Eye-AF, touchscreen and livestreaming capabilities, dual card slots, wireless image transfer, compatibility with APS-C lenses. Just last year MPB, the largest online platform to buy and sell used photography and video equipment, awarded the Alpha 7 III with their 2021 Photo & Video Kit Hall Of Fame award for Trendsetting for shaping conversation about how it looks as well as the images it captures.

Over the years we’ve featured many photographers and the work they’ve created using the Alpha 7 III. Below we take a glimpse at some of the images taken with the camera, a standout in the field for its compactness and ability to handle low light and extreme conditions.

Travel content creator Cody Conk used the Sony Alpha 7 III to create this long exposure light trail image. “The Alpha 7 III has been my go-to camera and does a tremendous job in low light situations.” Read more in Behind The Shot: A Long Exposure Light Trail In The Valley Of Fire.

Astrophotographer Ezekiel Coppersmith knew from the very first time he picked up the Alpha 7 III that it was exactly the camera system for him. “I find that in my Milky Way landscape photography that I ask a lot from a camera system and the Alpha 7 III has never let me down. From the incredible low light performance and insane dynamic range, I can show the world our night skies while most lay peacefully asleep throughout the night.” Read more in What’s In My Bag: Why This Astrophotographer Switched To A Sony Alpha Kit For Capturing The Stars.

You’ll also find the Alpha 7 III in physicist and photographer Stefan Liebermann’s kit. “The full-frame sensor with 24mp is exactly the right one for low light photography with a high signal-to-noise ratio with sufficient resolution. Due to the second base ISO of 800, it allows astrophotography at a high dynamic range.” Read more in What’s In My Bag: A Sony Alpha Kit For Mesmerizing Astro-Landscapes & Beyond.

The Alpha 7 III is also wildlife photographer Wojciech Sobiesiak’s camera of choice. “There are many obstacles in getting the perfect shot when photographing wildlife and one of the main challenges is low-light. I mostly photograph at dawn or dusk and the Sony Alpha 7 III handles low-light situations incredibly well. The wide ISO range mitigates image noise and gives me great image quality.” Read more in What’s In My Bag: A Fast & Silent Double Lens Kit For Photographing Wildlife.

The Alpha 7 III's ease of use also makes it a top choice for food photographer Hilaire Baumgartner. "I know there are a lot of amazing tech aspects to this body," she says, "but my favorite and most used is the touch screen focus control. I also love how light it is. I often shoot handheld and appreciate my hands not fatiguing quickly. All in all, it’s a really great, compact, full frame body!"
