Prior to the announcement of the new Sony 12-24mm f/2.8 G Master lens, Sony Artisan and professional wedding/portrait photographer Kesha Lambert had the opportunity to try it out. For Lambert, an ultra-wide zoom like the 12-24 f/2.8 G Master is a must have for wedding photography. Ther perspective gives her powerful creative options throughout the wedding day. After putting the lens to the test in several portrait session scenarios, Lambert shares her thoughts on its performance.

“For me personally, my two most-used focal points are a medium telephoto and an ultra wide – so this lens is right up my alley,” explains Lambert. “The 12-24mm range is ultra, ultra wide, and it fits well with my shooting style. I do a lot of ultra wide portrait and wedding work that shows the scene. I also use it to create a more dramatic portrait – there’s something about that wide perspective that makes a dramatic train look even more grandiose. I also simultaneously get to capture more of the environment in the shot, which is why I love it so much for my work.”

Lambert has previously used the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 G Master as her wide zoom for weddings, so she’s able to see just how big of a difference the 12-24mm focal range makes firsthand.
“If you compare this lens to other focal points like the 16-35mm,” says Lambert, “you’ll see just how more of the scene it gives you. It’s a significant portion of the scene and a huge jump from what I’ve used in the past.”

“After using the lens for a few portrait sessions, I also noticed that the 12-24mm f/2.8 GM had virtually no flare. I was shooting outdoors on a beach against the sun, and when I compared the scene to other lenses there was a notable difference. It was really impressive. And the sharpness at the corners are amazing - I actually had to double-check to make sure I was shooting at its widest point because I was amazed at the sharpness.”
